Social, Global, and Green: Proof-of-Concept Projects (2 Hours)


Welcome Activity
  • What do you most want to change about the world?
  • Or, what do you think would be valuable for students to change about the world (or work on changing)?
  • And... what else do you want to learn today? (See the Google Moderator links below!)

Review The Social, Global, and Green Presentation from our last meeting (if necessary).

Through a "proof-of-concept" project, we will make a plan to "effect positive social change" and have something to show for it at the end of the session. Remember that these projects are also about supporting "the whole child."

Proof-of-Concept Projects
  1. Select a social change goal or a cause to support. (See the presentation above for ideas.)
  2. Select a tool (or tools) to use to pursue that goal or support that cause. Examples include blogs, wikis, social networks, and any other tool you've learned together in the past year.
  3. Set up the tool for use by you, your colleagues, and/or your students. This doesn't need to be a polished or finished setup... it is merely a "proof-of-concept" that you might actually refine and use.
  4. Your project can be an example of something students would make or do, something a teacher would use, or something a LITT would use for professional development. Ultimately, of course, the project needs to "effect positive social change."
  5. "Bring it to life" with images, links, and content.
  6. "Take it deeper" by exploring the topic using these same social media! (Try a search with Google Blog Search.)
  7. Be prepared to answer these questions:
    1. How will your students and/or colleagues participate in this project? (And, how might someone outside the RBUSD participate?)
    2. How would this project help support "the whole student"? (Consider identifying which of the 40 Developmental Assets it might support.)
  8. Add a link to your project and/or a link to a video explaining your project. (You can use Jing to screencast your explanation, or any other camera to record yourself presenting your project.)
